Professor Trim otherwise known as Dr Gary Eggar, an expert in physical activity and weight management and member of Coca-Cola's Health and Wellness Advisory Council says recent research has shown that even a moderate level of physical activity such as simply walking 30 minutes a day, can lengthen life by 1.3 years, and add 1.1 more years without heart disease, compared with those who have low activity levels.
An editorial in the Washington Post did the sums - invest 30 minutes a day walking and you’ll spend 49 days of the next 12 years of your life walking to gain an extra 1.3 healthy years.
In addition to going for a short walk, here are five easy tips from Professor Trim on how your family can increase their daily activity levels: |

Don’t sit when you can stand. Standing requires you to carry your own body weight and burns energy.
Minimise remote control use whether it’s the TV, stereo or garage door.
Carry your bags. Don’t use a trolley. Carrying a weight in the arms increases energy use. Walking with a trolley helps, but carrying the bags is even better.
Walk up (and down) stairs. Don’t use a lift or the escalator.
Park away from your destination and walk.

Susie Burrell, consultant sports and paediatric dietitian, and member of Coca-Cola’s Health and Wellness Advisory Council gives advice on how to get your children to eat their greens.
You told us that the biggest challenge you face with your children and food is getting them to eat enough vegetables – lettuce, leeks, beans, cabbage, broccoli, sprouts…you name it, they won’t touch it! Getting children to eat their greens is never easy, but parents shouldn’t give up.
