In our quest to address the 'urban myths' about The Coca-Cola Company and identify the truth behind the legends, here's this edition's Smart Fact:

      THE MYTH:
I've heard that a tooth in a glass of Coke will dissolve overnight. Does sugar in regular sparkling beverages cause tooth decay?

THE FACTS:

Our teeth are constantly bathed by saliva which is vital to their wellbeing. This helps neutralise both the acid in sparkling beverages and the acid which is produced when plaque bacteria digest sugar and other carbohydrates. When you drink a Coke your teeth are exposed for only a short amount of time, rather than sitting for hours in a glass. Any acidic drink, including fruit juice would produce similar results.

Tooth friendly tips:
  • Keep your teeth and gums clean by brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and by regular flossing
  • Most drinks containing carbohydrates and food acids are best enjoyed at mealtimes
  • Rinse your mouth with tap water, eat some cheese or chew sugar-free gum after eating and drinking
  • It's a good idea to use a straw when you can
  • Choose a variety of foods from all the basic food groups. Eating many different kinds of food in moderate amounts is the key to a balanced diet, and helps general good health
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups
